This week, I read articles about the golden hour. Prior to this week, I had no idea what this meant or what it entailed. Ms. Mormon sent over some articles and a video over what to expect at 23 weeks in pregnancy. Reading the articles really intrigued me because I was learning so much about all of the complications and benefits that could occur during the first hour of life for a neonate. During my mentor meeting with Ms. Mormon, I learned so much!!! She went over the main goals of the golden hour. For risks: hypothermia, hypoglycemia, surfactant deficiency; For management: ventilation/oxygenation, thermoregulation, minimizing water loss, glucose administration, surfactant. This meeting left me with so much knowledge and I learned in depth about what everything meant. I am so grateful for this opportunity to have a mentor, because I am able to learn from a primary source. I never would have learned this much online, because I was unaware that this was a major part of a baby’s delivery. Ms. Mormon provided a slideshow that she made in grad school which went over the bulk of information. There was so much that we covered and I kept on reading more after the meeting was over. This excites me for what else I can learn and new concepts that I will get familiar with!!
