This week, my mentor, Ms. Mormon, sent some articles and videos about the levels of the NICU and what to expect. We are still building the foundation and I am understanding more of what reality is truly like in the NICU. With this, I learned so much during our mentor meeting. We covered a variety of topics, such as: why a premature baby loses heat quickly, the different levels of the NICU/what is required for each baby in the levels, skin to skin or “kangaroo” care, milestones a baby goes through, light cycling, and more. I had lots of questions after reading the articles which Ms. Mormon was able to answer. She had some great stories and brought up other topics which were similar. It was great to hear from a professional, because not everything you read online may be accurate or it may be a little “dramatic”. This mentor visit made me really excited about what’s to come in the future because I have so many more questions and areas that I want to continue to explore and research. Next week, we are beginning researching what goes on throughout the entire journey of a premature baby from 23 weeks until they are ready to go home! I look forward to researching this and learning more about neonatology!!!
