This week, my mentor, Ms. Mormon, gave me information related to x-rays, blood pressure (BP), infections, antibiotics, and head ultrasounds. To be honest, I didn’t know that much and had no idea what to look at on an x-ray before this week. But, after I met with Ms. Mormon, I was able to attain a vast amount of information. For starters, I learned that a neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) should start by ensuring that everything looks normal, so they’ll count how many ribs the baby has, if they have a clavicle or if their diaphragm is completely shut. A radiologist, or an expert in reading x-rays, will send them a report so they can ensure they're on the same page. I learned about some different complications that can be seen in x-rays and I got to see some real photos! Another important aspect that I learned this week was about intracranial hemorrhaging, or brain bleeding. I got to see what it looks like during ultrasounds and Ms. Mormon shared ways to prevent this from happening. She also shared some insight on heart issues, BP and antibiotics. After I had a change to meet with her, I was able to fully understand everything that we went over. I thought that this would be hard to learn, but I realized that it just takes practice and knowing the basics. I’m so glad that I have the opportunity to learn from a NNP who has experience and can answer the many questions that I have!!
